Reconstructive Procedures
Skin Cancer Reconstruction
The vast majority of skin cancer occurs on a highly visible part of skin such as the scalp, face, ears and neck. These areas also receive the most sun exposure. Since the lesion is usually visible, most skin cancers are detectible in early stages.
Most skin cancers can be treated by removal of the lesion and closure of the wound as an office procedure. However, some skin cancers are more complex either in size or location such as around the eyes, nose or lips. These lesions require removal with frozen sections or Moh's surgery. Reconstruction and closure of these wounds is usually done by Dr. Moravec with local anesthesia.
Head/Neck Trauma Reconstruction
Trauma to the head and neck usually occurs from accidents and dog bites. Injuries typically include facial and ear lacerations, nasal fractures and cheek bone fractures. A facial plastic surgeon like Dr. Moravec repairs these injuries. The specific surgical treatment methods and place of surgery will vary depending on the type of injury and the size of the wound. Sometimes more than one procedure is needed to achieve the desired result.
Scar Revision
Scar tissue is a normal result of the healing process. Whenever the skin is broken by an injury, infection such as acne or by surgery, there will always be a scar. Most scars heal in a predictable fashion, particularly those created by a surgical treatment.
Scars are permanent in nature and cannot be removed totally, but there are a number of techniques that can help to improve the skin's appearance. The goal of scar revision is to improve the appearance of the defect either by disguising it, relocating it, or minimizing its prominence. Success of scar revision depends on many factors such as scar size, shape and location, the patient's age, heredity and general skin condition. Some non-surgical techniques for minimizing the appearance of scars include application of ointment such as silicone or steroid cream, pressure dressing, massage or steroid injections. Some surgical treatments include dermabrasion or sanding to smooth the scar as well as surgical excision and realigning the scar.
